Is it just me, or has the summer slipped away quicker than my childhood years? The warm summer days have passed faster than I’ve ever experienced. I guess part of this feeling can be attributed to our newfound freedom after a long period of uncertainty, confinement, and restrictions. Also, this year the weather has cooperated and given us hotter (although quite dry) days compared to previous summers.
I’ve just returned from 2 weeks on the road, camper in tow! Weddings and family reunions were the themes of this year’s summer vacation! We decided to switch-up our “usual summer vacay” and travel the many miles to reconnect with family. It had been quite some time since we’ve been able to spend time physically with them, as they’re miles and provinces away. The long miles put on the truck and camper were so worth it to bond and connect once again!
Family…family dynamics can be tricky! Most of us rely on family members for emotional and physical support, sometimes financial, and this can be the foundation that determines certain relationships. I don’t think there is a family out there who has a “normal dynamic.” Every family has drama, hardships, heartache. Although each family is unique, I also see many similarities in each family dynamic. The relationships and patterns we have impact our health both negatively and positively.
Our journey wasn’t our usual scenic route! I’m used to the majestic mountains, serene waters, and mature trees! But, as we drove through the notorious flat prairies (where they say you can watch your dog run away for a week) I found a different kind of beauty. The sky seemed to be further away and with this came easier, deeper breathing and a new sense of clarity. The small towns with the old buildings and grain elevators standing tall and regal, remind me of my youth and simpler times. It really is so charming! As we arrived at our first campsite (a field with 2 trees and a picnic table), my family was there waiting. I realized once again that the most important thing is the people you’re with, not your surroundings! We had a week full of laughs, tears, and love!
Next, we meandered our way to Souris, Manitoba! Family reunion number 2! It’s been 12 years since we’ve been to this quaint little town. There’s so much history that resides here. The buildings haven’t changed, nor has the population grown! It has a staggering population of 1,876 and has remained true to its authenticity! With peacocks roaming the streets, oblivious to the cars trying to get by, and the longest swinging pedestrian bridge in Canada, we experienced the calmness and tranquility this little town provides. We were happy to spend another long-overdue week with family, filled with love and connection.
Family…our first introduction to relationships, our first experience with being loved unconditionally despite our shortcomings. Yes, there are arguments, disagreements, drama, and heartbreak, but isn’t that what life’s all about? All I know is that being with family, for me, is the safest place of all! Let’s accept our family for all their quirks, believe in them, have faith in them, and remember we’re all doing the best we can with what we know!
Until next time…happy holidays!!
